Rescue Time: New Time Management Site Sign Ups
May 9th, 2007 by DanO
You’ve heard these a million times:
"Self-discipline is the key to creating a steady career as a writer."
"You have to sit down and write every day to improve your craft."
Or, as I read in one online signature:
"Writing is 3% effort and 97% not surfing the Internet."
I used BackpackIt to set my writing goals, but its a hassle to track my time. Enter Rescue Time:
RescueTime is a web-based time management tool (currently in private alpha). We offer:
- The ability to see exactly how you spend your time. No data entry, no effort– Your time gets tracked down to the second without you having to actively track it.
- Instant and easy time-management analytics. Instantly know how much time you’re spending on a particular application (like “Microsoft Word”) or a particular category (like “Communication”).
- The ability to set time management goals (daily or weekly) and receive notification when you meet (or fail to meet) your goals.
- Tools to see how you compare to other people in your industry.
I signed up for the e-mail update when the beta goes live and will post back with a report if I get in. Something like this, with reminder alerts and passive tracking of my time, is exactly what I need to remind me to stop researching what I’m writing on the web and get to writing it.
You can head over and sign up as well.
Thanks for the suggestion! I signed up for it too.
I’ve been using a mac widget to track my time manually. That’s worked so far. It keeps me hyper conscious of what I’m working on. It’ll be interesting to see how this Rescue Time works.
Oh, and it works on Macs too.
BTW, how do we know if we got into the beta?
They will send you an e-mail to the address you registered with when they open up for beta.
Hey Dan-
Thanks for the mention! If we can help a sci-fi author crank out good stuff, we’ll be able to go to bed happy (writing sci fi has been my unrealized career goal since I was 12). Ah, well. I probably ought to stick to web apps.
Cheers,
Tony (RescueTime)
