Breaking Into Television Writing: Warner Bros

DEADLINE AND FELLOWSHIP DATES HAVE CHANGED: SEE THIS POST.
Last month, I profiled the ABC/Disney Fellowship program for aspiring television writers. Today, I’ll covering the basics of the program offered by Warner Bros. studios.
Where the Disney program is a year-long, paid internship, the Warner Bros. TV Drama Writers Workshop runs from 12:30p-2:30p every Wednesday for eight weeks. And you pay them. Even though it’s shorter than the Disney program, don’t dismiss it too quickly. Many new writers get their start this way and you can still keep your day job. Here are the highlights of the submission process:
- Submission period: May 1, 2007 - August 1, 2007
- You can submit as many scripts as you like
- You can only submit spec scripts of one hour dramas that aired on primetime network or cable during the 2006 - 2007 season. No pilots, short stories, plays, feature film scripts, etc.
- Include a current resume or bio, but no recommendation letters are required
- Semi-finalists will be notified in writing by October 1 and interviewed.
- Workshop will run from October 17 - December 5, 2007 at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, CA.
- If selected, there is a $495 fee to participate
There are a few more critical details abot your submission at the official site along with application and release forms. I had a friend accepted into the program a few years ago. He got to meet many of the writers on the Warner Bros. dramas that were shooting on the studio lot. He made many contacts. It’s definitely worth the $30 submission fee.
