Networking at Comic Con
Jun 15th, 2007 by DanO
Comic Con is the largest comic book convention of the year. It’s held annually in Southern California at the San Diego Convention Center. This year is going on from July 25th to 29th. And if you are serious about writing in the field, you need to get down there and meet the editors of your favorite titles.
And by "meet", I don’t mean "pitch." I mean talk to them about their titles, your love for comics, your love for writing. Show them passion. If they ask you to submit ideas to them at a later date, you’ve hit the jackpot. If they don’t, keep it friendly, promise to keep in touch and move on. At the very least, you’ve made a contact.
Remember, the cardinal sin here is to pitch an idea. You’d think that would be the point, but there are legal implications for the editors taking unsolicited pitches. You have to sign a release so they won’t get sued. If they ask you to submit after the convention, then check the websites for each individual company for their own releases.
Also, it doesn’t hurt to do your homework before you head down there. Look who’s listed as the editor of your favorite titles. Check to see what other titles they are working on. Go to that publisher’s website and see what kinds of work they put out.
Most of all, go to have a good time.
