Backstab, Puffle Launch in this week’s iPod and iPhone Top 10

The line-drawing game SPY Mouse from EA/Firemint that debuted at the top spot of the iTunes app market three weeks ago held that spot for a fourth week in a row. Recently launched sidescroller Jetpack Joyride dropped off the charts to make room for a Disney app, Puffle Launch and Backstab, an action title from the summer making a resurgence on the strength of a recent sale price. The entire Top 10 list below.

In this game, you draw a line for a mouse to follow so he can steal the cheese without getting pounced on by angry, shuriken-throwing cats. With its cartoony style, the game appeals to both kids and adults. A fun trailer and plenty of great reviews shot this new app right to the top of the charts in its debut week and it remains there for week 4.

Angry Birds

Angry Birds stays in the top 5 with the help of a new chapter launched last month. Chapter 17 introduced 15 new levels and 2 new Golden Eggs to find and is the last chapter for the Mine and Dine episodes.

Angry Birds Seasons

Angry Birds Seasons stays neat the top of the charts due to the update that introduced the eagerly awaited Moon Festival episode. The free update includes 15 new levels, new achievements and 8 hidden mooncakes that unlock a secret level.

Angry Birds Seasons‘ fans also got a surprise over the summer in the form of the in-app purchase, the Mighty Eagle. Once paid for at US$0.99, the Mighty Eagle can be used once an hour to skip a level or rain down devastation on the nefarious pigs as well as unlock new achievements.

Fruit Ninja

A recent update in June has kept this fruit slicing game firmly in the top 10 this summer. A pomegranate was introduced allowing players to slice it multiple times before it bursts clearing the screen of bombs and other fruit. A relaxing soundtrack was added as well.

Puffle Launch

Disney’s virtual world for kids, Club Penguin, has a mini-game dubbed Puffle Launch. And now it’s an app. Twenty-four levels of shooting the puffle, avoiding obstacles and grab the prize at the end. For fans of the virtual world, coins earned in the app can be transferred to the MMO. Confused? Ask your nephew.

Angry Birds Rio

College football kicked off over the weekend and EA slashed the price of this game app that allows you to play games as you favorite college team. A team building feature, the ability to get into the Rose Bowl and multiplayer functionality all come with the game. Reduced price is ending soon.

Backstab

Though released back in June, a recent $0.99 sale has brought this app back to the top of the charts. An action combat title has you climbing walls to get the jump on the bad guys using deadly combos.

Cut the line, drop the candy in the cute monster’s mouth. Great for all ages and with the sequel out, Cut the Rope: Experiments, there’s more where that came from.

This elegant game continues to stay in the top 10 despite no new content since March. Launch your hungry bird off of hills and high into the sky while trying to stay ahead of the night approaching quickly from behind. Simple, beautiful and fun.

This multiplayer Scrabble game has been a hit since 2009 when it debuted. It’s now spawned a sequel of sorts, the social hangman word game, Hanging With Friends
